 July 7–10, 2016

Welcome from Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montreal

The Summer Senate Presidents’ Forum in Montreal, Quebec was opened by Denis Coderre, who welcomed the Forum to Montreal, “the city where Moliere meets Shakespeare.” Mr. Coderre commented on the warm hospitality that characterizes his city and stressed the value of partnerships to work together for the benefit of all citizens. “The world is no longer defined by countries or continents,” he said, “but by partnerships.” He affirmed the importance of preserving the essential balance between openness and vigilance in a changing world.

Mr. Coderre reported that Montreal has embarked on extensive programs to redefine the future, including transitioning to hydroelectric energy sources, in addition to switching to electric cars and taxis, and light rail. He described the reshaping of Montreal, not only through extensive building but also through new business opportunities and partnerships.
